Tesla Roadster: New vs. Original — Complete Guide
The new Roadster's uncertain future, the original 2008–2012 classic, and what collectors should know.
The Tesla Roadster has two distinct identities: the original Roadster (2008–2012) — Tesla's first car, built on a Lotus Elise chassis and the vehicle that proved electric sports cars were viable — and the new Roadster, a second-generation performance flagship that has been announced, delayed, re-announced, and delayed again. This guide covers both.
The New Tesla Roadster (2nd Gen)
Status as of 2026
The new Tesla Roadster has not entered production. It was first unveiled in November 2017 at a surprise reveal during a Tesla Semi event. Since then, the timeline has shifted repeatedly.
Honest Assessment
Treat the new Roadster as vaporware until Tesla announces an actual production date and opens order books. Reservations (placed with a $5,000 deposit in 2017 for base, $50,000 for Founders Series) have been held for nearly a decade.
New Roadster Claimed Specs
These are the figures from the 2017 reveal — take them as aspirational, not final:
| Spec | Claimed |
|---|---|
| Starting price | $200,000 |
| Founders Series | $250,000 |
| Range | 620 miles |
| 0–60 mph | 1.9 seconds |
| 0–100 mph | 4.2 seconds |
| Quarter mile | 8.8 seconds |
| Top speed | 250+ mph |
| Seats | 4 |
| Drivetrain | All-wheel drive (3 motors) |
Note: These specs are from the 2017 unveil and are not confirmed production figures.
Why these numbers matter less than they seem: In 2017, a 620-mile range EV was unimaginable. In 2026, the Lucid Air already does 516 miles. The spec that remains genuinely extraordinary is the 1.9-second 0–60 — only the Plaid achieves anything close at 1.99 seconds, and that's in a full-size sedan. A 1.9-second roadster would still be the fastest production car ever built if delivered.
The Original Tesla Roadster (2008–2012)
The original Roadster is where Tesla's story starts — and it's now a legitimate collector's item.
What Was the Original Tesla Roadster?
Tesla's first vehicle was a collaboration with Lotus Engineering. Tesla took the Lotus Elise chassis, dramatically modified it (approximately 6% of parts are shared with the Elise despite the similar appearance), and fitted an electric drivetrain.
Original Roadster Specs
| Spec | 2008–2009 (Roadster 1.5) | 2010–2012 (Roadster 2.0/2.5) |
|---|---|---|
| Battery pack | 53 kWh | 56 kWh |
| Range | 244 miles (EPA) | 245 miles (EPA) |
| Motor | AC induction | AC induction (improved) |
| 0–60 mph | 3.9 seconds | 3.7 seconds (2.5) |
| Top speed | 125 mph | 125 mph |
| Production | ~500 units | ~2,000 units |
The original Roadster was sold from 2008–2012. Total production was approximately 2,450 units globally. These are genuinely rare vehicles.
2010 and 2011 Tesla Roadster: What's Different?
2010 Roadster: The Roadster 2.0 — Tesla's updated version that addressed early-build reliability issues. Improved power electronics, better software, and revised suspension calibration compared to the 2008–2009 cars. The 2010 is generally considered the beginning of the "reliable" original Roadster era.
2011 Roadster: The Roadster 2.5 — the final and most refined version. Key additions: standard audio system upgrade, revised front fascia and interior, Sport package available (further suspension and power upgrades), the fastest of the original Roadster variants (0–60 in 3.7 seconds with the Sport package). Most desirable year for buyers seeking the best original Roadster.
2012: Tesla's last production year for the original Roadster. A small number of 2012 units were built from remaining inventory; specification-wise they are identical to 2011 models.
Buying a Used Original Tesla Roadster
Current market pricing (2026):
- Original Roadster (any year): $35,000–$90,000 depending on condition, mileage, and battery health
- 2011 Roadster 2.5 Sport: $60,000–$90,000 for low-mileage examples
- The original Roadster has appreciated significantly from its $109,000 new price to collector territory for pristine examples
The Critical Issue: Battery Degradation
The original Roadster used a 2.0 battery pack consisting of 6,831 standard 18650 lithium-ion cells. After 12–18 years, these packs have degraded significantly. Real-world range on many original Roadsters is now 150–200 miles rather than the 245-mile rated range.
Tesla stopped supporting the original Roadster battery with free replacements years ago. A battery replacement on an original Roadster is expensive and requires either Tesla's Roadster battery replacement (approximately $29,000 when available) or third-party solutions using modern cells.
Pre-Purchase Checklist for Original Roadster
- 1. BMS report — Request a Battery Management System report showing current pack health vs. original capacity
- 2. Prior battery work — Ask about any battery replacement or module swap
- 3. Power Electronics Module inspection — Have a Tesla-familiar independent shop inspect the inverter
- 4. 12V system health — Verify the 12V auxiliary system is healthy
- 5. Charging port verification — Original Roadsters use J1772 connector — NOT compatible with current NACS/Tesla connector without adaptation
- 6. Service network awareness — Tesla discontinued direct service; rely on independent specialists
Historical Comparison: 2011 Roadster vs. 2026 Model S Plaid
A comparison that puts the Roadster era in context:
| Spec | 2011 Roadster 2.5 Sport | 2026 Model S Plaid |
|---|---|---|
| 0–60 mph | 3.7 seconds | 1.99 seconds |
| Range | 245 miles | 396 miles |
| Top speed | 125 mph | 200 mph |
| Price new | $109,000 | $89,990 |
| Seats | 2 | 5 |
The pace of EV development from 2011 to 2026 is remarkable in these numbers. The original Roadster — which was genuinely fast for its era — is now comprehensively outperformed by a five-seat family sedan that costs less.
The Bottom Line
New Roadster: Real specs, real ambition, genuinely uncertain timeline. If you placed a reservation in 2017, wait it out — or request a refund if you need the deposit back. Don't plan around it for near-term driving.
Original Roadster: A genuine piece of EV history and a collector's item appreciating in value. Buying one requires careful battery health inspection and comfort with a limited service network. The 2011 Roadster 2.5 Sport is the best of the original production run.
